Renewable transport fuels increase dramatically in Iceland
REYKJAVIK, (Xinhua) -- The share of renewable energy in fuel consumption of transport has increased tenfold in Iceland since 2010, according to a report on the development of energy transition in transportation published Tuesday.
The report released by the Ministry of Industries and Innovation said the proportion of renewable fuels in fuel consumption of transport has increased from 0.2 percent to 2.4 percent since 2010. This change was much higher than expected.
The domestic renewable transport fuels have also increased fivefold during the past four years. In 2014, 23 percent of renewable fuels used in transportation were domestically produced. A number of new companies in Iceland have made an effort to produce renewable fuels.
The number of eco-friendly vehicles in Iceland has tripled since 2010. With an increasing number of methane refueling stations and charging stations, it is easier to get access to renewable fuels now.
